This manuscript describes the ONR Departmental Research Initiative on Coherent

Lagrangian Pathways from the Surface Ocean to Interior, called “CALYPSO”. An

innovative set of observational techniques are used, along with process study models,

predictive models, and data synthesis to identify coherent pathways for vertical

transport and to diagnose and predict the physical processes that underlie subduction

and transport across the base of the surface mixed layer. It addresses the ongoing

debate between the roles of mesoscale, O(10-100) km, and submesoscale, O(0.1 - 1)

km, processes on the vertical transport. Water travels thousands more times faster in

the horizontal than vertical, and discovering the routes by which it is transported

vertically beneath the surface, as also being carried horizontally by oceanic currents, is

challenging.
