Abstract:This chapter analyzes the interannual, seasonal, and large mesoscale variability of the western Mediterranean (WMED) surface circulation through the combined use of the NEMOMED8 simulation and satellite altimetry observations. It focuses on the mean geostrophic circulation derived from the simulation and provides a comparison to the mean currents derived from altimetry measurements. To assess the ocean variability, the chapter analyzes the Eddy kinetic energy (EKE) from both model and altimetry data. The main patterns of the WMED circulation are examined by using standard empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis in three subbasins of the WMED.
