European hake otolith' shape/chemistry were analyzed to assess the population structure in the Mediterranean Sea.
Between-areas differences were detected irrespective of the extent of the geographical units considered.
The largest discriminatory power was obtained by combining both information sources.
The shape/chemistry otolith information enabled the definition of a longitudinal gradient in the population structure.
